Movie Night: Growing Local, followed by a Q&A with a panel of local farmers
This film by Maine Farmland Trust explores the growing pains of the local food movement and the uncertain fate of the farmers and farmland that keep it alive. The locavore movement is old news. Growing Local takes the conversation to the next level. While “buying local” is on the rise, these three poignant vignettes make clear that small farms and access to locally produced food is not a sure thing.
After the movie, hear a very local perspective in a Q&A panel featuring Amy Sprague of Wolf Pine Farm in Alfred, Steven Gile of Gile’s Family Farm in Alfred, and Jordan Pike of Two Toad Farm in Lebanon.

Winter Speaker Series Features Saw Whet Owls

Alfred’s second annual Winter Wildlife Speaker Series continues Thursday March 8, 6:30-7:30pm upstairs at Alfred’s Town Hall, with a presentation by Judy Camuso from the Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

She’ll tell us about her work banding Northern saw-whet owls in southern Maine. She operates one of 25 banding stations along the east coast, set up to better understand this elusive animal. These tiny, beautiful owls weigh only a couple of ounces and many people mistake them for baby owls. They are fairly common in Maine, but small, quiet, and nocturnal – making them rarely seen and difficult to study!

Free and open to the public!
